The Tango Dance originated in the Argentinian capital Buenos Aires, but has spread all over the world allowing for changes to the dance in each area. Ballroom Tangos including American and International Tango incorporate the head snapping, staccato music and quick movements seen in movies such as ?True Lies? And Mrs. Smith?; whereas Argentina’s Tango neither has head snapping nor fast music and is a more fluid dance. The music in the Tango in Argentina originally blended music from Africa, South America, and Europe. Whether you are learning the Argentina version or the American version of the Tango, practice is necessary and fun!

Tango is more than just dance – it is a style of music and song. Tango singers are also frequently found where crowds gather. The men, in particular, style themselves after the most famous tango singer of them all - Carlos Gardel.

The Tango dance was originated in Buenos Aires and Montevideo, during the late 19th century. The music derived from the fusion of music from Europe, the South American Milonga, and African rhythms. The word Tango seems to have first been used in connection with the dance in the 1890s. Initially it was just one of the many dances, but it soon became popular throughout society, as theatres and street barrel organs spread it from the suburbs to the working-class slums, which were packed with hundreds of thousands of European immigrants.

Do not dance in one place, move counter-clockwise around the floor. Figures may be characterized as progressive (linear) or stationary (rotary). If you dance a stationary figure follow it with a progressive figure. Remember how to change direction so that you are always moving in the correct alignment. Do not meander around the dance floor.

Tango dancers dance the Vals much like they do tango, only with a waltz rhythm that has one beat per measure (at a beginner-level). This produces a rather relaxed, smooth flowing dancing style in contrast to Viennese Waltz where the dancers often take 3 steps per measure and turn almost constantly. Experienced dancers alternate the smooth one-beat-per-measure walk with syncopated walks, stepping on one- two- or (rarely) all three beats in a measure. Vals is characterized by its lack of pauses, and continual turns (giros) in both directions.

The awareness of the act of dancing makes a tremendous difference in how the interaction is embodied. If you feel and know why you are dancing, you make more than dance steps; you create a dance. Each tango step has an emotional content, given by the soul, and the plot of the improvisation-play can be the opposition of characters, between what is inside you and what is inside your partner.

Salon Tango was the most popular style of tango danced up through the Golden Era of the dance (1950’s) when milongas (tango parties) were held in large dance venues and full tango orchestras performed. This season of Dancing With The Stars is beginning to take shape. We have another celebrity who turned down the show. I told you last time about Kathy Griffin saying no to Dancing With The Stars, now Denise Richards tells the show “Thanks, but no thanks”.

Holy Dancing Old Farts Batman

Hold on to your hats for this one. It’s being rumored that Adam West of the old Batman series fame will be on the show. Again, I ask, why does the show dig up old people out of the ground for this show? Surely there are enough D listers and the like to get enough people for a Season. You can bet that these old farts are going to have some severe lower back pain after they get done with the show!

Perhaps they’re targeting the over 70 crowd? I’ll have to make sure to watch for the Ensure commercials on Dancing With The Stars.

Kathy Griffin Says ‘No’ To Dancing With The Stars

I’ve always wondered why Dancing With The Stars picked either over-the-hill celebs or has-beens. I figured it was because they were cheap to acquire. Maybe not.

At any rate, ABC’s Dancing With The Stars just got snubbed by several celebs.

Kathy Griffin, the fiesty red-head, said she had a hard offer from Dancing With The Stars but turned it down because she couldn’t touch her toes. I wonder if this is because she’s been spending a little too much time at the fast food restaurant, Jollibee’s in L.A.?

Dan Quayle was also rumored to have an offer from Dancing With The Stars. An ABC spokesman said that all they could say was “I can tell you he won’t be on the show”. I guess that’s final enough!

Wow, makes you think Dancing With The Stars is running out of D-Listers! I guess because all the A-listers are on European Vacations and couldn’t make the show.
